What Is Email Deliverability?
Purpose: Understanding deliverability is the foundation of any successful email program in Sure Send. This article explains what deliverability means, how mailbox providers evaluate your messages, and how the rest of this series helps you protect it.
Before You Begin
No setup needed for this one. This article is the starting point for the deliverability series. If you’re fixing an active problem right now, skip ahead to Troubleshooting Email Deliverability Issues.
What Deliverability Means
Email deliverability is your ability to get messages into a recipient’s inbox, not just off your outbox. A message can send successfully and still never reach the inbox if it lands in spam, gets filtered, or bounces outright.
Mailbox providers like Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo don’t publish their exact filtering rules. Managing deliverability is part technical setup, part ongoing reputation management.
How Sending Reputation Works
Every time you send an email, mailbox providers score it against your sending history and against similar mail from other senders. That ongoing evaluation is your sending reputation. It isn’t a single number you can check. It’s the overall trust a mailbox provider has built up in you as a sender over time.
A strong reputation means more of your messages land in the inbox. A damaged one means more get filtered to spam, or rejected before they arrive at all.
Gmail and Yahoo now enforce specific reputation thresholds for anyone sending in volume: spam complaint rates should stay under 0.1%, and rates at or above 0.3% put your ability to deliver mail at risk. [VERIFY: Confirm whether Sure Send surfaces complaint-rate data to users directly, so this article can point to where to check it.]
Deliverability Strategy vs. Marketing Strategy
Deliverability and marketing work toward different goals, and it helps to know the difference.
Marketing strategy drives business outcomes: conversions, showings, signed clients, engagement with your content.
Deliverability strategy protects your ability to keep reaching the inbox at all. It works by keeping you from sending too much email to people who aren’t engaging, or who are likely to mark you as spam.
Think of it like driving. Marketing is the accelerator. Deliverability is the brakes. You need both to get where you’re going.
The Rest of This Series
This article is the overview. The other five cover the specific practices that protect your deliverability in Sure Send.

- Email Compliance and Permission Best Practices. The regulations and permission standards that keep spam complaints low.
- Email Content Best Practices. How your subject lines, from name, and message content affect engagement.

Tips
Tip: Deliverability problems rarely appear overnight. They build gradually from low engagement, high complaint rates, or technical misconfiguration. The best time to work on deliverability is before you have a problem, not after.
